What is it made of?
The outer material is a medical grade vinyl. This vinyl is made for a 300 lb pressure test. The special formulation is made with key ingredients that allow the packs to go directly on the skin. This allows for no adverse reactions like freezer burn or heat rashes.
What is the interior solution?
Sodium acetate or hot ice is an amazing food grade chemical you can prepare yourself from salt, baking soda, and vinegar. You can cool a solution of sodium acetate below its melting point, then cause the liquid to crystallize. The crystallization is an exothermic process, so the resulting ice is hot. Solidification occurs very quickly that most of our packs fully activate in under 10 seconds.
Is this solution Safe?
As you would expect, sodium acetate is a safe chemical and is food grade. It is used as a food additive to enhance flavor and an active chemical in all of our hot packs. The heat generated by the crystallization of a refrigerated sodium acetate solution does not present a burn hazard, therefore you can never be hurt from our heat packs.
What is the Trigger?
Well, that is our secret now isn't it? The trigger is made of stainless steel and the outer surrounding is a plastic housing for durability. The stainless steel is formulated with other food grade chemicals, which cause the reaction to take place by triggering it or starting the reaction. It is not a battery or any form of electricity, therefore it never needs to be replaced. This allows the product to be used thousands of times.
How to reset our packs?
\
You can reset all our packs by placing them in boiling water on a stove until all the crystals have fully dissolved. Do not turn down heat during the process and do not use thin aluminum pans. Follow minute requirements on each pack or until clear.
On our smaller sizes, which include the 4x10 and 3x5s, you can throw the pack in with your dishes. The hot cycle must be working and in operation for this to work. Some dishwashers may not work because the heater is old from use or not reaching its full potential.
DO NOT EVER PLACE PACK IN THE MICROWAVE DIRECTLY
Place water in a microwave safe bowl, then place into the microwave for five minutes. Once the water is hot, place the pack in the water until it becomes completely clear. If after 10 minutes the pack is not clear, then microwave the water for another two minutes to reheat the water. After the two minutes, leave the pack in the water until you see it become clear. Remove and let cool.
Larger packs may have more trouble resetting because of bowl sizes and certain microwaves. If you have issues with the microwave please refer to boiling method.
